Renowned electronic music pioneer Aphex Twin has unveiled details about his forthcoming EP, marking his return to the music scene after a five-year hiatus.
The EP’s lead track, ‘Blackbox Life Recorder 21F,’ was initially shared on Aphex Twin’s Soundcloud account earlier today (Wednesday, June 21) but was swiftly removed. However, the song has now been officially released on all major streaming platforms.
The EP, titled ‘Blackbox Life Recorder 21F,’ is scheduled to be released on June 28, 2023, through Aphex Twin’s long-standing label partner, Warp Records.
The anticipation for this release began when fans discovered an augmented reality app linked to Aphex Twin. The app, named “YXBoZXh0d2lu,” started appearing through QR codes at recent performances and posters worldwide. The description of the app, “WAPP480,” aligns with recent catalog numbers associated with Warp Records. Fans speculated that the intentional misspelling of the first half of the app’s name was a clever play on words.
These clues led to widespread speculation on Reddit, with users theorizing that a new release from Aphex Twin on Warp Records was imminent. These speculations have now been confirmed.
‘Blackbox Life Recorder 21F’ will mark Aphex Twin’s first EP since the release of ‘Collapse’ in 2018.
The announcement arrives during a busy summer season for the musician, who is currently touring and has a packed schedule of headline performances at various festivals across Europe. Notable appearances include London Field Day Festival on August 19 and FORWARDS festival in Bristol on September 3, which will be his first performance in the city since 2006.
