South London’s Sister Midnight, a pioneering community-owned music venue, has introduced a novel addition to its offerings – an online radio station called “Sister Midnight FM” (SMFM). This new venture aligns with the venue’s core principles of community inclusivity and benefit, focusing on the SE London region.
Renowned as the first community-owned music venue in Lewisham, Sister Midnight is actively positioning itself as a cultural incubator for the SE London area. The recently launched radio station, SMFM, aims to provide a platform for local artists, musicians, community groups, historians, DJs, activists, and various other contributors.
With a diverse range of shows featuring contributors like Laani, DJ Gilla, Selextorhood Collective, and more, SMFM is geared towards nurturing artistic growth, sharing new creative works, and fostering greater participation in the local music culture. A particular emphasis is placed on ensuring access for those who may face barriers to physical involvement.
Lenny Watson from Sister Midnight expressed enthusiasm for the station, describing it as a doorway to new possibilities for community engagement and expansion. SMFM is expected to be a vital conduit for connecting with local individuals and involving them actively in the venue’s diverse endeavors.
Sister Midnight’s services extend beyond SMFM to include a 250-capacity grassroots live music venue, rehearsal spaces for musicians, a community café area, a private outdoor space, and a vibrant multi-disciplinary arts program. As part of its evolving vision, the venue is in the process of establishing a physical studio that will serve as the operational hub for the radio station as it continues to evolve and innovate.
