Introducing the “Get Paid Guide”: Empowering Artists to Navigate Royalties and Recording Codes

A comprehensive new resource called the “Get Paid Guide” has been launched to assist artists in understanding the intricacies of metadata, recording codes, and royalties. Aimed at musicians seeking clarity on payment and royalty processes, this guide serves as the “creator’s guide to data,” offering simplified information and valuable insights.

The “Get Paid Guide” is the result of a collaborative effort between prominent organizations in the music industry, including PRS for Music, The Ivors Academy, the Music Publishers Association (MPA), and the Intellectual Property Office (IPO). It comes equipped with explainer videos and checklists to help artists gain a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding royalties.

Fiona Bevan, Board Director at The Ivors Academy, highlighted the guide’s mission to ensure musicians do not miss out on their rightful royalties. By simplifying what may seem complex, the guide empowers songwriters, composers, managers, and publishers to navigate the world of data with confidence, ultimately putting more money in their pockets.

The guide goes beyond explaining royalties and also sheds light on International Standard Musical Work (ISWC) and International Standard Recording (ISRC) codes through concise and user-friendly videos. Furthermore, users can test their knowledge with a quiz titled “Are You Royalties Ready?”

Currently, the website features five step-by-step walkthroughs covering data and recording codes, a “get paid checklist,” and the aforementioned quiz to help artists gauge their understanding of royalties.

Michelle Escoffery, President of the PRS Members’ Council, emphasized the guide’s significance for songwriters, emphasizing that accurate data registration is crucial to ensuring fair compensation. By empowering artists with essential knowledge, the “Get Paid Guide” aims to bridge the gap between musicians and the complexities of the royalty system, enabling them to receive their rightful earnings.
