Ricardo Villalobos is a prominent figure in the minimal techno and microhouse genres, enchanting audiences around the world, including the vibrant scene of Ibiza. Born in Santiago, Chile, in 1970, Villalobos relocated to Germany at a young age due to the political upheaval caused by the Pinochet regime. Despite his early affinity for music, particularly playing conga and bongos in his adolescence, he never envisioned himself as a musician.
However, in the late 1980s, he ventured into the realm of electronic music, drawing inspiration from iconic acts like Depeche Mode, whom he avidly followed on their European tours.
Villalobos’s creative influences expand beyond Depeche Mode to include visionaries such as Daniel Miller, Thomas Melchior, Baby Ford, Daniel Bell, and Andrew Weatherall. Additionally, the rhythms of South American music have shaped his artistic journey.
While studying at university, Villalobos began playing his music at parties, initially for personal enjoyment. He established the Placid Flavour label in 1993, although it did not achieve significant success. His breakthrough came with the release of his first record on the German Playhouse label in 1994.
Since then, he has blossomed into a professional DJ, earning recognition as one of Europe’s foremost minimal DJs. Notably, he shares this distinction with other talented Chilean DJs and producers like Luciano Nicolet, with whom he occasionally collaborates, and Dandy Jack.
Ricardo Villalobos’s contributions to the electronic music landscape have left an indelible mark, captivating audiences with his unique sound and unyielding passion for the craft. His journey from Chile to Germany and his diverse musical influences have shaped his artistic vision, making him a revered figure in the world of minimal techno.
