Ticketmaster’s parent company, Live Nation Entertainment, is introducing an “all-in pricing experience” to provide transparency and eliminate hidden fees for concert and event tickets. This move allows ticket buyers to see the true cost of tickets upfront before making a purchase.
According to the company, fans are aware that service fees are typically included in ticket prices, but displaying the total cost from the start simplifies the ticket-buying process and aligns it with other retail shopping experiences. Reports indicate that SeatGeek, another ticket seller, is also working on implementing a similar pricing system.
The inclusion of hidden fees in ticket prices was brought to attention by US President Joe Biden during his State of the Union speech in February. President Biden called for an end to service fees on tickets and urged companies to disclose all fees upfront.
The National Independent Talent Organization (NITO), which has been advocating against deceptive ticketing practices, praised President Biden’s commitment to fee transparency. NITO urged all ticket sellers to clearly display the total ticket price and provide an itemized breakdown that distinguishes the artist’s set ticket price from the fees imposed by ticket sellers.
NITO emphasized the need for congressional action to eliminate excessive fees and regulate secondary ticketing, as millions of consumers continue to fall victim to predatory ticketing practices.
Hidden fees in ticket prices have faced significant criticism in recent years, particularly during the sale of tickets for highly anticipated tours by artists like Taylor Swift and Beyoncé.
In 2019, Ticketmaster was fined $4.5 million for deceptive ticket pricing practices.
