Kirk Degiorgio, the renowned UK techno DJ, has announced his retirement from DJing at the age of 56.

In a statement shared with Resident Advisor, Degiorgio revealed that his decision was prompted by the need for a pacemaker, which he is scheduled to have fitted. Although he acknowledged the benefits of pacemakers, he explained that they come with certain lifestyle restrictions, particularly concerning electromagnetic devices.

Degiorgio highlighted the challenges posed by pacemakers when it comes to using headphones and being in close proximity to large monitors in DJ booths. As a result, he made the difficult choice to cancel his upcoming gigs and retire from DJing. He expressed his intention to focus on studio work, where he can maintain a safe distance from monitors.

Having made a significant impact on the electronic music scene since the early ’90s, Degiorgio has released music on esteemed labels like B12, Planet E, and Rush Hour Music under various aliases, including As One, Blue Binary, Elegy, and Esoterik. He has also been a prolific writer for Resident Advisor.

In his statement, Degiorgio reflected on his career as a “wonderful ride” and gave his blessing to Ben Sims to continue their Machine parties independently. He expressed gratitude towards his wife and the staff at Ipswich Hospital for their exceptional care and potentially life-saving attention.
