Spotify Launches Global Rollout of Its AI-Powered DJ Feature

Spotify has introduced its AI-driven DJ feature, known as Spotify DJ, to over 50 markets worldwide. This beta DJ uses Spotify’s personalization technology and OpenAI’s artificial intelligence to curate continuous playlists of songs. The feature initially launched in English in February for Spotify Premium users in the US and Canada, expanding to the UK and Ireland in May. While the global rollout has expanded its availability, Spotify DJ is still only available in the English language.

Spotify DJ, designed for Premium subscribers, is now accessible in countries including Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, Ghana, Nigeria, Pakistan, Singapore, and South Africa during its beta phase.

Spotify DJ functions by curating music playlists and providing commentary in a “stunningly realistic voice” to mimic the experience of a live DJ. The feature also updates the playlist based on user feedback and allows users to skip tracks easily, helping the DJ learn and adapt to individual preferences over time.

Spotify stated, “We put this in the hands of our music editors to provide you with insightful facts about the music, artists, or genres you’re listening to. With this generative AI tooling, our editors are able to scale their innate knowledge in ways never before possible.”

The voice of the Spotify DJ was modeled after Xavier “X” Jernigan, the head of cultural partnerships at Spotify, who hosted the platform’s first morning show, The Get Up.
